The ARTeacher Fellowship is a professional development partnership between Walton Arts Center, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the University of Arkansas’ Center for Children and Youth focused on building the practice of arts-integration in area secondary English, science, and social studies classrooms. Now in its fourth year, the Fellowship provides expert training for twenty-five secondary teachers to explore and implement arts-integration methods to help students meet Common Core State Standards.

The Fellowship supports English, social studies, and science teachers in Northwest Arkansas junior high and high schools who have experience in arts-integrated teaching or who have an interest in learning more about it. Fellows participate in a three-day Summer Institute at the Walton Arts Center and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art with additional training days led by national arts education and integration specialists throughout the school year.

In addition to participating in exemplary professional development, the Fellows interact with other outstanding teachers through state and national conferences, and receive support for their students to participate in both Walton Arts Center and Crystal Bridges field trip programs. Creating instructional plans tied to the Common Core State Standards through arts integration is among the responsibilities of the Fellows during the program.

“It’s a pleasure collaborating with such talented and committed educators,” says Hung Pham, Director of the Center for Children and Youth at the University of Arkansas. “Our goal for this ongoing training is for these ARTeacher Fellows to become not just comfortable, but truly fluent practitioners of arts integration. Doing so requires time and support, but the benefits to students and schools as a whole are far-reaching." Zev Slurzberg, Assistant Manager for K-12 Partnership Programs at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, concurs. "This is an inspiring group of teachers to work with. After each session I am wowed by the creative ways the fellows are using the visual and performing arts to teach their students."

Laura Goodwin, Walton Arts Center’s Vice President for Learning & Engagement notes, “The work the Fellows do this year, learning how to effectively include the arts in core curriculum including English, social studies, and the sciences, will serve them throughout their teaching careers. They will develop content, methods and innovative lessons that will be relevant for years.”

Applications for the next year of the ARTeacher Fellowship program will be available in early spring. For more information, please contact Hung Pham ( or Patricia Relph (
